Installing Bollards – Do You Need A Handyman?

Date Posted:4 October 2024

If you're investing in traffic or safety bollards, you need to know how to install them properly, but would you be better off hiring a handyman? Or should you call a pro? Let's find out!

Whether you've chosen to invest in bollards for safety reasons or security, it was a good decision. Businesses and public buildings should always consider broadening their safety solutions to bolster security and protect their employees and guests.

However, you may have one big question on your mind after your purchase. Do you need a handyman? In short, no, you don't need a handyman. Safehub Bollard Shop stocks a range of bollards you can easily install if you have the correct tools.

But should you hire a handyman? That all depends on your skill level and access to the correct tools. Let's look at the bollard installation process, we also have some handy hints and tips to help you on your way.

The Installation Process

The manufacturer's installation guidelines will detail the tools you require for proper installation; at a minimum, you will need a hammer drill, a hammer, a socket, a broom, and the fixings that come with the parking bollards.

For the best results, surface mount bollards should be installed on flat surfaces. You should also read through the manufacturer's installation guidelines thoroughly before you do anything else.

Where do you plan to install the bollard (or bollards)? You should always mark the ground, whether you use chalk or tape, to ensure uniform placements.

The hammer drill is used to drill guide holes in the concrete. You will need to do this for each bollard hole. If you are installing multiples, you may find it simpler to drill all of the guide holes at one time. That way you can sweep up any debris before you begin the next step. When you continue drilling the guide holes, aim for a depth of around 120 mm and once these are complete, you slip the plastic plugs in place and hammer them in.

Now you can cover the holes with your bollards and once they're lined up, place the screws in, using the socket to tighten them by hand to ensure they are firm, but not overly tight.

The installation process isn't overly complicated and if you have the right tools, you should be able to carry it out yourself. However, not everyone feels confident in doing so, and that's why many opt for the professional installation services of a handyman or manufacturer.

However, things are more complicated if you're purchasing in-ground bollards. The process for these is different, requiring core drilling for existing concrete or should be set when new concrete is poured. This might be something a handyman could handle, but it should be left to the bollard professionals.

Proper bollard placement and installation are key to ensuring its safety success, and manufacturers have a clear understanding of how to get the job done properly. If your bollards aren't properly installed, they could fail under pressure, leading to serious asset damage or physical injuries.

Hints & Tips

Whether you're installing your flexible bollards on your own or hiring a professional, you should always keep them in the packaging until it's time to install. This will ensure they remain intact and no fittings go missing.

If you haven't yet carried out a risk assessment of the site, it's important to carry one out before you install traffic bollards. First, there should be a risk assessment to identify the correct number and placement of stainless steel bollards. Next, there should be a risk assessment to identify any potential hazards throughout the installation process.

Always consult the manufacturer's installation guidelines before you start the installation process. It will highlight the materials required to ensure proper installation. The next step is to measure out the placement and make marks so you can place them in the correct spot. How you space your bollards depends on their use, and if you're not sure how far apart they should be, we would be happy to offer advice on the subject.

Dragging your bollards can damage them, so ensure you have enough manpower to lift and move them into place without sliding them on the ground. Safety is always the priority, especially when dealing with installing safety solutions. So, if you plan to install bollards on your own, ensure the installation team is wearing the correct protective gear to limit the risk of injuries.
